Traditional Diversity & Inclusion "Activities," or generalized annual training, are usually regarded as symbolic events with little return. True Diversity represents intellectual diversity among qualified individuals and not racial or gender diversity for the sake of optics. It is no surprise that employees play a pivotal role in our businesses but are they as active, engaged and motivated as they could be to realize the best efficiencies? Are they just meeting your organizations expectations of production or are they exceeding your expectations with zeal? Are your team members willing to give you insights into their personal stores of brain power and self-motivation to help improve business? Can your team's level of integration be improved? What is the team maturity level?

Diversity Management

Effective diversity management is both an ethical and business imperative. Diversity is an asset for any entity that values differences and promotes inclusion in spite of superficial identifiers such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical disability or other external features.

Is your business case to reap benefits in:
  1. Multicultural Sales and Marketing Objectives
  2. Financial/Business Performance Objectives
  3. Operational/Functional Objectives
  4. Product/Service Objectives
  5. Image Enhancement objectives
  6. Internal Objectives
  7. Other Business Objectives (e.g.- strategic alliances)
"At Google, we don't just accept difference - we thrive on it. We celebrate it. And we support it, for the benefit of our employees, our users, our culture and students interested in the technology industry."
Diversity@Google: A place to be you,
Founded by an American and a Russian born American in 1998. Their mission statement was "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." 2011 unaudited sales were $37.9 Billion.

My team helps educational institutions, corporations and government entities embrace diversity with an informed view, empowering teams and building stronger relationships. This fun, substantive, educational and interactive training sets itself apart from traditional symbolic programs that are perceived as ineffective, cosmetic and counterproductive. (Source)

Benefits

Diversity Business CaseOrganizations that implement compelling diversity management initiatives report marked improvements to their profits and goal achievements. The Diversity Index Portfolio, which is based on the performance of the DiversityInc. top 50 companies for Diversity, over a ten year period outperformed the S&P 500 by 24.8% and the Nasdaq by 28.2%. Experience, culture, heritage can offer new ideas, vantage points, markets and improved processes.

Are your team members voicing their opinions, or just "going along?"

Maximize the investment your organization has already made in hiring a team.

"I had all the disadvantages required for success."
Larry Ellison,

"If the rate of change inside an organization is less than the rate of change outside, the end is in sight."
Jack Welch,
Former Chairman and CEO of General Electric

Communication shapes the future of the leader, and the organization. Gain the most competitive advantage possible. Leverage individuality, uncover fresh perspectives, engage and discover intangibles that offer more value, synergy and loyalty.

Employees generally clamor for Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose!
If they are guarded, self-censorship is at play.
  • Encourage creativity,
  • Enhance productivity,
  • Spawn greater motivation,
  • Build solid relationships and favorable publicity
  • Reap savings from a variety of diverse suppliers
  • Decrease EEO complaints/Lawsuits
  • Increase employee engagement and retention,
  • Inspire and drive innovation from the "knowledge workers" in your organization

Organizational performance increases in direct proportion to increases in morale, engagement, contribution and efficiency. This organizational effectiveness depends on effective leaders AND managers.

"Give whatever you are doing and whoever you are with the gift of your attention."
Jim Rohn,
American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker

Poor Morale

Sears showed that employee attitudes are directly related to customer retention where a 0.05% rate of employee dissatisfaction equaled a 1.3% rate of customer dissatisfaction; this relationship translated into a 0.05% revenue loss, or $200 million in lost sales. Unengaged U.S. workers admit to squandering 2.09 work hours per day (price tag for lost productivity: $544 billion annually). (Source)

Mistrust between management and workers

More companies are striving to retain their high performers, who drive their organization's performance, productivity and profitability. Compensation alone though, is not enough to keep the highly skilled, motivated and experienced workforce that your organization needs to excel. The Tangerine Watson Impact Study of 2011 indicated that forty-nine percent of white agency employees intend to remain with their agency for the next two years, compared with just 26 percent of Latinos, 25 percent of Asians, 22 percent of African Americans and 21 percent of other ethnic groups. The issues motivating multicultural employees to jump ship? Lack of diversity, few career advancement opportunities and limited salary potential. The sentiments expressed in a 2010 survey showed that 66% of employees are unhappy with their jobs, (Source) and are planning to leave to remove themselves from what they perceive as either a role without opportunities or an uncaring culture. An uncaring culture and poorly trained management yielded over 100,000 costly discrimination complaints in fiscal 2011 with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the highest ever! This trend represents HIGH management risk and must be reversed.

RELIGION HISTORY

Macro view of major religions over the centuries
"Food for Thought"
  • Charts put people in a box
  • Feelings are facts
  • When in Rome, do as the Romans do
  • Success and failures both have a great deal to teach
  • Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others.
  • People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.
Accommodating individuals of varying backgrounds, cultures, ethnicity and talents in varying fields of knowledge is just one aspect of diversity. Providing incentives, encouragement, a challenging environment and opportunity for every employee to empower the best capabilities from individuals of varied backgrounds and talents is my view of diversity.

Performance systems, development plans and education plans play a significant role in achieving the main goals and objectives of diversity as established by the company. Ascertaining the individual's aspirations - both professional and personal and aligning them with the corporate environment will greatly enhance the success of a diversity program.

What can a shared vision and diverse opinions yield when you allow the team to find patterns, insights and answers to deeper questions?

When one of the greatest documents in history was signed, the US Constitution, Benjamin Franklin stated:

"I don't entirely approve of this constitution at present. I am not sure I'll ever approve of it. But I am also not sure that I am right. I have lived a long time and the longer I live, the more I begin to doubt my own infallibility, the more I begin to respect the judgment of others.

We've collected together men, who not only have great wisdom but also prejudices, selfish views and local interests. From such an assembly we can't expect a perfect production.

It astonishes me that we have come as close to perfection as we did. It will astonish our enemies... who think of our separate states coming together only to cut each others throats. So... I consent to this constitution because... I expect no better and because... I'm not absolutely convinced... that it is not... the best."
