What Difference Will YOUR Team Difference Make?

Organization Detractors
"When dealing with people remember that you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but with creatures of emotion, creatures bristling with prejudice, and motivated by pride and vanity."
Dale Carnegie
American writer, lecturer. Author of How to Win Friends and Influence People (still a best seller, issued 1936)

Blame Culture

In some workplace and educational circles there is an assumption that "less qualified" and "undereducated" blacks and immigrants are taking opportunities away from hard-working whites. This false assumption causes an increase in stereotype rhetoric, workplace discrimination & harassment, and offensive conduct.

Poor Morale

Sears showed that employee attitudes are directly related to customer retention where a 0.05% rate of employee dissatisfaction equaled a 1.3% rate of customer dissatisfaction; this relationship translated into a 0.05% revenue loss, or $200 million in lost sales. Unengaged U.S. workers admit to squandering 2.09 work hours per day (price tag for lost productivity: $544 billion annually). (Source)

Discrimination

Over 100,000 costly discrimination complaints in fiscal 2011 with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the highest ever! This trend represents HIGH management risk and must be reversed.

Lack of Diversity and Advancement

The Tangerine Watson Impact Study of 2011 indicated that forty-nine percent of white agency employees intend to remain with their agency for the next two years, compared with just 26 percent of Latinos, 25 percent of Asians, 22 percent of African Americans and 21 percent of other ethnic groups. The issues motivating multicultural employees to jump ship? Lack of diversity, few career advancement opportunities and limited salary potential.

Management's Effect on Workers

More companies are striving to retain their high performers, who drive their organization's performance, productivity and profitability yet compensation alone is not enough to keep the highly skilled, motivated and experienced workforce. Reasons vary but here are a few where management plays a part.

Think you have a bad boss? Join the club: Nearly one in two employees say they have a bad boss, according to administrative staffing firm OfficeTeam. Do an Internet search for "My boss is killing me" and it turns up more than 20 million results.

People waste way too much time stressing about bad bosses. On average, employees spend about 19.2 hours a week worrying about "what a boss says or does" - including a whopping 13 hours during the workweek and 6.2 of their weekend hours - according to a survey by Lynn Taylor, a workplace expert and author of Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant (TOT). What's more, the worries cost companies real money: 77% of employees experience physical symptoms from stress, such as heart problems, according to a study from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Stressed employees cost employers nearly twice as much in health-care costs - roughly $600 more per person per year, on average.

Five types of bosses are explained in the article above:
  • The Bully
  • The Micromanager
  • The Poor Communicator
  • The Saboteur
  • The Fickle Boss

Uncaring Culture and Lack of Opportunity

The sentiments expressed in a 2010 survey showed that 66% of employees are unhappy with their jobs, (Source) and are planning to leave to remove themselves from what they perceive as either a role without opportunities or an uncaring culture.

Lack of Personal Outlook Accountability

Are we the ones to blame for our lack of career success? A survey by VitalSmarts found that 97 percent of employees described themselves as having one of these five traits:

  • Lacking reliability
  • Making not-my-job comments
  • Procrastinating
  • Resisting change or
  • Projecting a negative attitude.

Stereotype Threats

Stereotype threat refers to being at risk of confirming, as self-characteristic, a negative stereotype about one's group (Steele & Aronson, 1995). This term was first used by Steele and Aronson (1995) who showed in several experiments that Black college freshmen and sophomores performed more poorly on standardized tests than White students when their race was emphasized. When race was not emphasized, however, Black students performed better and equivalently with White students.

Violence

Race "sound bites" often times spin, or neglect, facts creating false impressions. To address race and other related issues we need to also deal with the facts head on. Here is a sample of some data that contradicts popular thinking about race-on-race violence.

What an amazing conference! And thank you for your contributions in the form of your outstanding presentation. Our side-bar discussions were both enjoyable and enlightening too. Any discussion of diversity has the potential of being very controversial. Your discussion of diversity, however, put the topic in a very positive light without sugar-coating. It was believable and in so being it was highly beneficial. Your discussion of your personal past and your perspectives as your career developed was the quid essential piece that made your presentation both engaging and believable and thus provided the conduit to be impactful.
